General Description
The inflammation that occurs wherever skin surfaces rub against each other is called intertrigo. The favored sites are the groin, under the arms and breasts, the buttocks, and between the toes. Contributing factors besides friction are heat, moisture, and sweat retention. Overweight persons are prone to develop intertrigo. Intertrigo is characterized by redness, maceration, and irritation of the affected areas. In severe cases, the skin may weep and crack open.
Causes
Intertrigo is caused by a mixture of fungi, yeast, and bacteria.
Medical Treatments
Treatment entails thorough cleansing and drying of the involved sites. The application of a topical anti-yeast cream should help resolve the condition. Use of medicated powders may prevent reoccurrence. Obese persons are urged to lose weight.
