Citrus Bioflavonoids

Citrus fruits supply Bioflavonoids, substances that are not required for life but that may improve health. Citrus Bioflavonoids and related substances are widely used in Europe to treat diseases of the blood vessels and lymph system, including hemorrhoids, chronic venous insufficiency, coldsores, leg ulcers, easy bruising, nosebleeds, and lymphedema following breast cancer surgery. These compounds are thought to work by strengthening the walls of blood vessels.

Bioflavonoids aid in possessing antioxidant activity and increasing intracellular levels of vitamin C. Citrus bioflavonoids and rutin have synergistic antioxidant effects with vitamin C, making them potent free radical scavengers having beneficial effects on capillary permeability and blood flow. Additionally, bioflavonoids impact the activity of various enzymes that positively influence healthy cells as well as malignant cells.

Naturally occurring flavonoids have documented effects on capillary permeability and swelling and have been used for the treatment of disorders of the circulatory systems. There is some evidence for the use of rutin in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, edema, hemorrhoids, microangiopathy (disease of small blood vessels), varicosis and venous disorders. Formulations, mainly consisting of the trihydroxyethyl derivative of Rutin, are used in Europe, Mexico and other Latin American countries for the treatment of such venous disorders.
